Swimming with sharks in South Africa wasn't the beginning of my obsession with these toothy fish. My love of sharks began in childhood even before Peter Benchlys book was published. By the way shark fans, this is also the 50 year anniversary of Jaws. Peter was so upset that the movie stimulated the over fishing and killing of so many great whites that he bacame a shark conservationist later in life.
Still my facination was set in motion years before the book and cage diving in South Africa has been the culmination of a dream.
The picture above was taken in Maui at my favorite store that sold great white shark teeth among many other collectibles. Unfortunately, this store burned to the ground in the devasting Lahaina fire two years ago.
Fun shark facts:
Sharks do not get cancer.
Most sharks do not stop swimming to sleep.
Humans are not their favorite meal.
Shark livers are large and make up a third of ther body weight, and Orca's love to eat them.
The two largest sharks, whale and basking are somewhat vegan, for you vegans out there.
